August 10, 2004- San Diego, CA- Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company, San Diego's newest professional theatre dedicated to creating, producing and educating, today announced the artistic team for their inaugural production. Remains, a world premiere play by Seema Sueko, will open September 10 at the Ark Center for Performing Arts and will run through October 3, 2004, with shows Thursdays- Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 2PM.
Remains, partially based on actual events, is the story of an American college student found dead in Tel-Aviv. Through her journal, her mother pieces together her daughter's journey through the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Leading the cast is Seema Sueko, founder and artistic director of Mo`olelo and playwright for Remains. Ms. Sueko wowed San Diego audiences earlier this year in her brilliant performance as Jennifer Marcus in The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow at The Old Globe. She is also a three-time winner of the Chicago "Jeff Citation" Award for her performances in the world premiere of Rebecca Gilman's The Crime of the Century (Best Actress in a Principal Role), The Waiting Room (Best Actress in a Supporting Role), and A Piece of my Heart(Best Ensemble). "Remains is a play about differing perspectives of what 'the truth' is for those involved with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There are good people, bad people, and funny people on all sides of the conflict who we meet through Laila's journal. I am thrilled to launch Mo`olelo boldly with this play," says Ms. Sueko.
Joining Ms. Sueko is local favorite Linda Libby and newcomer Kathryn Venverloh. Ms Libby recently starred in the critically acclaimed Women Who Steal at the San Diego Repertory Theatre and won a Billie Award for her portrayal of Bloody Mary in South Pacific at Lamb's Players Theatre. Ms. Venverloh is a graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Since moving to San Diego, she created the role of Claire Worthington in the new play Hypocrisy and has been seen in several staged readings, including Brand and Iphigenia at Aulis directed by Rosina Reynolds.
Remains is directed by Siobhan Sullivan, making her San Diego directorial debut. Originally from Chicago, IL, she is co-founder of Renegade Theatre Company where she directed their productions of Merrily We Roll Along and West Side Story. Rounding out the production staff is lighting designer and Mo`olelo co-founder Kim Palma, scenic designer Robert Dahey, sound designer Paul James Kruse, costume designer Megan Fraher, stage manager Cynthia J Greenberg and assistant director Christiana Fiocco.
Mo`olelo is committed to providing a living wage for its artists and has started by working closely with Actors' Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. All three actresses and the stage manager are members of Actors' Equity Association.
