Perspectives on Vietnam for Today's Youth In tandem with Mo`olelo's 2005 production of Shirley Lauro's Vietnam War play, A Piece of My Heart, we presented an education program called Perspectives on Vietnam for Today's Youth. Over 700 high school students from Academy of Our Lady of Peace, El Cajon Valley High, High Tech High International, Hoover, Garfield, Gompers, Montgomery, Ocean Shores and Ray Redding High Schools were invited to special matinee performances of the play. Prior to the show, the teachers and students received study guides and in-class preparation assistance on the themes in the script. Following the performances, Mo`olelo sent teams of Vietnam Veterans and actors into the classrooms to facilitate post-show workshops that deepened the students experience of the performance and their understanding of the Vietnam War. The workshops were aligned with the required California Department of Education High School History-Social Science, Language Arts, and Visual & Performing Arts Content Standards and Analysis Skills. We offered three post-performance workshops: Social Science Workshop - A Vietnam veteran and a teaching artist visited the classroom and facilitated a discussion about A Piece of My Heart and the Vietnam War. Through dialogue and interactive games and exercises, the students gained meaningful proficiency in the following History-Social Science Grade 9-12 Analysis Skills: Chronological and Spatial Thinking; Historical Research, Evidence, and Point of View; and Historical Interpretation. Playwriting Workshop - A Vietnam veteran and an actor visited the classroom and led the students through interactive exercises about how dialogue is written and the use of interviews in the creation of A Piece of My Heart. The students then had the opportunity to interview the veteran and write a scene or monologue based on that interaction. This workshop covered Visual & Performing Arts, History-Social Science, and Language Arts Content Standards and Analysis Skills for Grades 9 12. Acting Workshop - A cast member from A Piece of My Heart visited the classroom and led the students through acting exercises utilizing the text from the play. Students read monologues aloud, discussed creating character, doing research and dramaturgy, and building a career in the theatre, thus meeting Visual & Performing Arts Content Standards for Grades 9 12. |
