The Mo`olelo to Joyce Program
Kim Palma developed and directed the Mo`olelo to Joyce program, which taught the artistry of technical theatre and design to high school students. Throughout the academic year students learnt through workshops led by Kim. This culminated in a weeklong internship working beside the professional crew at The Joyce Theatre in New York City.
Summer 2004 - Notes From Kim
This past July saw another successful trip to New York, with four high school students and Kim Palma traveling on the "Mo'olelo to Joyce" internship program. They stayed in a rented apartment just off central park on the upper west side of Manhattan, but spent most of their time at The Joyce Theater in the Chelsea neighborhood. The kids had a blast and the Joyce crew was excited to have a chance to share their wealth of technical theater knowledge with such an enthusiastic group. The first few days of loading in and technical rehearsals for the flamenco dance company "Carlotta Santana" were long ones, usually 8am to 10pm, which gave the kids a taste of the down side of working in theater! But after the show was up and running they had show calls only, which meant the days (unless there was a matinee of course!) were free to explore the city. On Wednesday the even got to see a broadway show in the afternoon before heading to the theater to work at night!
Three of this year's students had just graduated from high school, and the fourth is now in her senior year. Kim is extremely pleased to report that two of the New York Internship participants, one from last year and one who attended both years, will be freshman at CalArts this fall. This is quite a coup, considering that the school only accepted 12 students into their technical theater program. Congratulations to all!
